Scramble Quest concept phase has been funded!

April 2, 2026

Have you heard? Scramble Quest has received funding from the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW. That makes it official: I’m working on Scramble Quest for the foreseeable future (aka half a year and hopefully longer)!

What does it mean? What will I be doing? Well, what I got was the “Early Phase” funding. This is intended for creating a clear concept and a prototype as a proof of concept. In the case of Scramble Quest I want to create a good solid base that you can build on. I will be writing an initial story draft, designing the combat and the cards it uses, as well as the arenas the combat will happen in. This will involve a lot of research, looking at comparable videogames, but also card games, RPGs and even LARPing!? While that happens I’ll also be working on the Prototype, which suits me just fine, as I much prefer having something concrete to work with, rather than just a design document.
On the way towards the next phase I’ll also be looking for a team to make this game become real. I’ll be on my own for the next 6 months, but I hope to take on some team members as we enter the next phase of development. As a Tech Artist, I may have knowledge across various game development departments, but am no master in them, so I will need a small team with a diverse skillset to get this done. I’m really looking forward to finding the awesome people I’ll get to work together with!

Hold up!? What is Scramble Quest? It’s a tactical round-based real-time RPG, if that makes any sense? The best comparison I can give you is, imagine Final Fantasy Tactics, except the combat is kinda like Musical Chairs? All players/sides pick an action from a common limited pool (the aforementioned cards) and then have a few seconds to run around the map and find the best position for the chosen action. The framing for these encounters is a story, set in a fantasy world twisted by out of control magic, in which several adventuring parties live-action roleplay a selection of short campaigns, as part of an effort to use up environmental magic. This as a vehicle to reveal more about the characters and the world they inhabit.

I hope I can tell you more soon!
